Essay Questions for 2014-2015 / Class of 2017

Below are the application deadlines and essay questions for Owen Graduate School of Management's MBA program.

Round 1 Deadline: October 28, 2014
Round 2 Deadline: January 13, 2015
Round 3 Deadline: March 13, 2015
Round 4 Deadline: May 5, 2015

Please limit all essays to 500 words:

While business school is a time for exploration, we do expect you to have a strong sense about why you want an MBA and what you hope to do once you graduate. Applying to business school is an introspective process and we want to make sure you have a good sense for what you want from a program, where you hope it will lead you and why Owen is well suited to help you attain your goals. Your essays give us great insight into your personality and your other unique qualities.

Owen Vanderbilt Essay 1. Explain your short-term and long-term career plans as specifically as possible. When combined with your studies at Owen, how will your background, previous experiences, interests and personal attributes enable you to pursue these goals successfully?  (500 words maximum)

Owen Vanderbilt Essay 2.  Vanderbilt looks for individuals who will make an impact. Discuss a time when you made an impact in your professional or personal life. How has this experience equipped you to contribute to the Vanderbilt community?   (500 words maximum)

Owen Vanderbilt Optional Essay 1.  You are strongly encouraged to provide an additional statement to clarify and explain any of the following: gaps of more than three months in full-time employment, lack of recommendation from your current or most recent supervisor, limited full-time work experience (ignore if you are a recent undergraduate), poor academic performance, weak test scores, academic misconduct, violations of the law, or anything else you think is important for the Admissions Committee to know about you that is not already addressed elsewhere in your application. Applicants reactivating a previous application submitted within the last two years should provide their additional statement here. (500 words maximum)

Owen Vanderbilt Optional Essay 2. You may provide in the space below any additional information you would like for us to consider that would strengthen your application.   (500 words maximum)

Diversity Scholarship - Underrepresented Minorities To enhance the educational experience of all students, we seek to increase diversity in the student body. Therefore, we offer up to three scholarships ranging from $20,000 to full tuition awarded based on the degree to which an individual demonstrates how he/she has supported the academic, personal or professional advancement of U.S. underrepresented minorities (individuals who are citizens or permanent residents of the U.S. and are of African American, American Indian, Hispanic American, or Pacific Island American descent). To be considered, you must submit an essay (250 words max) describing the most relevant experiences that qualify you for this award. Priority consideration is given to applicants who apply by our January application deadline.

Forté Fellow Program for Women: We offer Forté Fellow Scholarships ranging from $10,000 to full-tuition. Nominees are chosen based on the following criteria:

Candidates should exhibit exemplary leadership in one or more ways: academic leadership, team leadership, community leadership, and creative leadership.
Candidates should demonstrate a commitment to women and girls via personal mentorship or community involvement. Such commitment is in alignment with the mission of Forte Foundation.
Nominees will represent diverse educational and work backgrounds, career goals, ethnicities, and citizenship.
To be considered for the Forté Fellow Scholarship, please submit an essay describing the most relevant experiences that qualify you for this award. Priority consideration will be given to applicants who apply by the January application deadline. (200 words max)

Professional Activities: Describe any professional, academic, and community activities or organizations with which you have been involved that are important to you (description, positions held, responsibilities/accomplishments, dates of involvement).  500 words max

Personal Activities: Describe any personal or community activities or organizations with which you have been involved that are important to you (description, positions held, responsibilities/accomplishments, dates of involvement). 500 words max

Cross-Cultural Experience: Describe any significant periods of time you have spent living, working, studying or traveling outside of your home country (location, purpose/description, starting and ending dates). 500 words max
